Things to check before you call:

If you think your hot water or combi boiler system isn’t working, don’t panic. Before you call us, take these steps and you might be able to resolve your problem on your own:

  • If you have an LP gas, make sure you have fuel in your tank. If you have natural gas, verify that your gas is on.
  • Make sure your thermostat is set to “On” and in the “Heat” mode.
  • Check your circuit breaker to ensure that you have not had a nuisance trip and your heat system does have power.
  • Check your boiler switch to make sure it is “On”. This is typically an older toggle switch and may or may not have a Red cover plate.
  • Is a section of your baseboard not heating? It may be air-bound. If you have radiator bleed valves try removing this excess air.
  • Is the water level in your boiler too low? There should be 12 - 15 psi on the heating side of your boiler. If there is not try adding water to your system through your system water feed valve.

What Is Boiler Kettling?

If your boiler is making rumbling, banging, or whistling noises — almost like a tea kettle coming to a boil — you're likely dealing with a problem called kettling. It happens when water flow through the heat exchanger is restricted or disrupted, causing localized overheating. The water in that restricted area can flash to steam, creating pressure pockets that collapse and produce those distinctive sounds.

Common Causes of Kettling

  • Limescale buildup narrowing the heat exchanger passages
  • Sludge or debris restricting water flow
  • An oversized or undersized boiler for your heating system
  • Low water pressure reducing flow through the system
  • A faulty thermostat that allows the system to overheat

Preventing Kettling

Prevention for both boilers and tankless units is essentially the same: regular descaling and flushing (especially important in hard water areas like parts of the Hudson Valley), maintaining proper flow rates, and scheduling annual maintenance. Most tankless manufacturers recommend flushing with a vinegar solution at least once a year — or more often if you have very hard water — to keep the heat exchanger clear and prevent kettling before it starts.

If your boiler or tankless unit is making unusual noises, don't ignore it. Kettling that goes unaddressed can lead to heat exchanger damage, reduced efficiency, and costly repairs down the road. Give us a call and we'll diagnose the issue and get your system running quietly again.

Kettling in Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless (on-demand) water heaters use a similar principle to boilers — water passes through a heat exchanger where it's heated rapidly. Because of this shared design, tankless units can experience the same kettling issues:

  • Scale buildup is the biggest culprit. Hard water deposits accumulate inside the compact heat exchanger over time, restricting flow and causing hot spots. This is actually more of a concern in tankless units because their heat exchangers are smaller and more intense than traditional boiler heat exchangers.
  • Flow rate problems — if the flow rate drops too low from a partially closed valve, kinked line, or clogged inlet filter, the water sits in the heat exchanger too long and overheats. This produces kettling sounds and can trigger the unit's high-limit safety switch.
  • Undersized gas lines or improper venting can cause erratic heating that mimics kettling behavior.
